Chain Wax REX Black Diamond Hot Wax 480g
REX Black Diamond Hot Wax is a premium hot wax treatment for bicycle chains, developed as an alternative to conventional chain oils and lubricants. It offers cyclists exceptionally low friction, outstanding wear resistance, excellent dirt-repelling performance and much easier drivetrain maintenance. The 480 g package is enough for approximately twenty waxing sessions, depending on the selected mix and the number of chains treated.
A hot-waxed chain does not need regular oiling and does not collect dirt in the same way as an oiled chain. Maintenance becomes much cleaner and simpler – in many cases, rinsing with warm water is enough. A hot-waxed chain also keeps the rider and bike cleaner, and strong solvents are not normally required for cleaning. Hot waxing is suitable for all bicycles and chains, whether used on road, MTB, gravel, touring or everyday training rides in different weather and trail conditions.
Rex is a well-known Finnish ski wax manufacturer with more than 70 years of experience in paraffin wax development. Since entering the bicycle lubricant market in 2015, Rex has continued to innovate in the field of chain lubrication. Black Diamond Hot Wax combines Rex’s long paraffin wax expertise with advanced Black Diamond additives, creating a solid version of the award-winning Rex Black Diamond chain lubricant.
The package contains one black additive block and eleven white paraffin blocks. The black additive block is hand-poured in Rex’s product development laboratory in Hartola, Finland. This two-part system allows the rider to choose the most suitable blend for the intended conditions: a versatile 11+1 mix for regular use or a more concentrated 4+1 mix for maximum wear resistance.
The 11+1 mix is recommended for general use and everyday training. In this blend, the additives and paraffin wax are in an optimal ratio, providing effective lubrication and a high number of waxing sessions. Although the 11+1 mix may not last quite as long as the 4+1 mix in good dry conditions, it is often the better choice in very extreme conditions such as wet sand, dust and mud.
The 4+1 mix is intended for situations where maximum wear resistance is the priority. It is ideal for long cycling trips, stage races and rides where the longest possible service interval is desired. In good road and off-road conditions, a chain waxed with the 4+1 mix lasts extremely well. However, in harsher conditions, the high concentration of the black additive can have the opposite effect, so the 11+1 mix is recommended instead.
When using the 4+1 mix, seven white paraffin blocks remain. These can be used for cleaning and as a wear-resistance-enhancing pre-treatment. Pre-treating the chain with white paraffin helps the 4+1 mix last longer and provides the best possible chain care.
Both the 4+1 and 11+1 mixes last over 1000 km in dry road conditions, which is considerably more than many conventional chain lubricants and hot waxes. REX Black Diamond Hot Wax has been thoroughly tested by the Australian Zero Friction Cycling laboratory, where it has shown excellent results, especially in road conditions.
Before hot waxing, the bicycle chain must be cleaned thoroughly. A strong chain cleaner, such as one from Rex or Morgan Blue, is recommended. Proper cleaning improves wax adhesion to the chain and helps achieve better wear resistance. If the chain has already been treated with hot wax before, rinsing with hot water and wiping the chain dry is usually sufficient.
For standard waxing, melt all the wax blocks in the package on low heat: one black block and eleven white blocks. For an extra wear-resistant blend, melt one black block together with four white blocks. The volume of the 4+1 mix is usually enough to wax one to two chains. Place the wax blocks and the chain into a heat-resistant pot or another suitable container and heat until the wax has melted. Any container that has been in contact with wax must not be used for food preparation afterwards.
Allow the chain to warm up in the wax mixture and move it around in the melted wax so the blend can penetrate thoroughly between the chain links. Multiple chains can be hot-waxed at the same time if needed. Then lift the chain out of the wax and let it cool. Wipe away excess wax lightly. A correctly treated chain will feel stiff once cooled. Before fitting it back onto the bike, flex the chain links until they move freely again. After installation, the chain needs a few kilometres of riding to bed in properly.
Re-wax the chain when it starts to make noise or feels dry. Before applying a new treatment, rinse the chain with hot water to remove loose dirt, wipe it dry with a clean cloth and allow it to dry completely. Then repeat the hot waxing process.
Wear suitable protective clothing, gloves and safety glasses during hot waxing. Do not leave hot wax unattended, do not place wax blocks in a microwave oven and do not melt wax in cookware used for food. Keep the product away from open flames, do not heat above 100°C, keep out of reach of children and use only in a well-ventilated area.
