E-Bike Motor SHIMANO EP8 DU-EP800 1st Generation

The SHIMANO EP8 DU-EP800 is a 1st generation e-bike mid-drive motor developed especially for e-MTB riding and a more natural ride experience. With 250 W continuous rated power and up to 85 N·m maximum torque, it delivers strong yet refined pedal assistance, allowing riders to focus on the trail, stay in control and enjoy technical terrain with confidence.

The EP8 drive unit is built around a pure trail focus. A lighter, quieter and more compact motor reduces pedalling drag and helps preserve a natural pedal feel both with assist power on and off. This makes bike handling more predictable and gives the rider better feedback on the trail.

The motor provides evolved MTB performance, including up to 20% more cruising range and reduced heat buildup. Lower internal resistance and efficient operation help keep assistance smooth on longer rides, climbs and repeated high-load trail sections where stable drive unit performance matters.

The DU-EP800 is highly versatile and compatible with multiple drivetrain applications. It uses the same frame mount as the DU-E8000 and DU-E7000, making it easier to integrate into a wide range of e-MTB frame platforms. It is compatible with mechanical 12-, 11-, 10- and 9-speed drivetrains, Di2 11-speed systems and FC-M8150 serration.

The EP8 DU-EP800 also supports 11-, 8-, 7- and 5-speed internal geared hubs. Di2 compatibility with both internal geared hubs and rear derailleurs allows the use of SHIMANO electronic shifting solutions, while Intelligent Walk Assist helps move the bike more easily in demanding sections.

The motor features a brushless construction, mid-drive position and 24 mm narrow spindle type. It is chain device compatible and includes torque sensor, crank arm position sensor, cadence sensor and bike speed sensor support. A 12 V DC power supply is available for both front and rear lights.
