The SHIMANO DU-EP500 is a 2nd generation e-bike mid-drive motor that combines versatile performance, quiet operation and a highly natural ride feel. With 250 W continuous rated power and 60 N·m maximum torque, it provides confident support for everyday riding, city use, touring routes and longer journeys where smooth and controllable assistance matters.
The compact design, brushless motor construction and refined assist delivery create a ride that feels natural and remarkably quiet. Its whisper-quiet operation and balanced weight help maintain predictable bike handling, while 60 N·m of torque gives dependable support on climbs, when carrying loads and across varied terrain.
The DU-EP500 is designed for exclusive compatibility with SHIMANO’s second-generation battery management system via EW-SD300. This ensures modern system integration and compatibility with newer SHIMANO e-bike components. The motor is compatible with V-brake, disc brake, roller brake and coaster brake systems, making it suitable for a wide range of e-bike builds.
For a smarter riding experience, the DU-EP500 supports AUTO SHIFT, helping the rider maintain a consistent pace and intensity. When used with Di2, automatic shifting is supported with an 8-speed internal geared hub, a 5-speed INTER-5E internal geared hub and a rear derailleur. SYMPHOMATIC support helps coordinate pedalling and shifting for a smooth and natural ride.
E-TUBE PROJECT gives riders extensive control over the motor’s behaviour. In BASIC MODE, the assist character, maximum torque and assist start can be customized. FINE TUNE MODE allows up to 15 unique assist characters to be created, making it possible to adapt the drive unit precisely to riding style, terrain and personal preference.
The motor supports BOOST, HIGH, TRAIL, NORMAL and ECO assist modes and includes On/Off, Intelligent and Quick walk assist functions. It also features Safe Way Home, E-TUBE communication, firmware updates via E-TUBE PROJECT, 12 V DC power supply for front and rear lights and a maximum total light current supply of 2 A.
